Watch “The Making of Boyhood - 12 Years on Film”

Following a successful box office run, Richard Linklater's shot-over-12-years Boyhood is now racking up end-of-year awards. I've already posted three articles about it. You're reading my fourth.

I first saw the movie in mid-June at Los Angeles' Arclight Hollywood, before the release and all the hype -- and spoke with director Linklater afterward, along with Ellar Coltrane (Mason) and Patricia Arquette (Mom). I then posted a capsule review, including their comments and my photos of the post-screening Q&A and audio recording of the complete 29 minute post-screening discussion. Later, following the MPAA's issuance of an R rating, I wrote a little rant about the Ratings Board's controversial decision to keep teens from seeing a film about teens.

In August, Kramer vs. Kramer author Avery Corman, on whose book the Oscar-winning Best Picture of 1979 was based, had a highly personal reaction to Boyhood. (Full disclosure: Mr. Corman is my uncle, and the women he is writing about in the article are my mother and grandmother.) In a way, his connection is mine, as well. The conversation I subsequently had with him mirrors those which I've had with just about everyone I know who's seen the film. It simply must be discussed. Tweets, Facebook posts, texts, and even emails just won't do it.

As we approach the end of the year, the picture is receiving well-deserved industry recognition, showing up near or at the top of just about every organization's honors. Just two days ago Boyhood won 12 awards from U.S. critics' groups including Best Picture and Director from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Boston Society of Film Critics, and New York Film Critics Online. It also won Best International Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards. Yesterday it was named one of the American Film Institute's Top 11 Movies of the Year.

IFC Films has now released the 10-minute featurette The Making of Boyhood - 12 Years on Film. It's an intimate, behind the scenes look at the 12 year epic through the eyes and words of Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, and Lorelei Linklater. The movie itself is now available for digital download ((iTunes, Amazon, Google Play etc.). It will be released on DVD/Blu-Ray/Cable Video On Demand on January 6.

For 20 years I was a professional in the entertainment industry, from commercial broadcast radio in America's fourth largest market to band management to record production. But my passion is independent film, and I spend much of the year traveling to film festivals to see indies and meet the actors, directors, and others responsible for creating them. I'm a writer, photographer, and videographer, currently serving as Senior Vice President for Media & Technology and Public Relations at PROnetworks as well as Editor at Larry411.com
