My pics of “The Young Kieslowski” World Premiere Q&A at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival

On Saturday, June 14, 2014 I attended the gala World Premiere of The Young Kieslowski at the Los Angeles Film Festival. The sold-out screening was held at the Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE. The film was a selection in the Narrative Competition section.

The past several years have seen a wealth of memorable coming of age movies, from some of my recent film festival favorites The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Mud, The Kings of Summer, The Spectacular Now, Joe, and The Way Way Back, to the current The Fault in Our Stars and soon-to-be-released Boyhood. There weren't many at this year's Los Angeles Film Festival. But I don't think The Young Kieslowski would have had that much competition anyway in the mental contest I engage in when selecting my Top Picks.

There is a tried and true formula that helps define the genre and when used properly (i.e., it's necessary) the results can be powerful. The opening voiceover, the shot of a college freshman driving up to his school with the ivy covered walls reflected in the window, a high school kid being shoved into a locker. When a COA film turns convention upside down, when the familiar tropes are tossed aside, that's when a movie has the potential to break through the glut of similar titles. The Young Kieslowski achieves that goal.

See my full-length review.

For a synopsis see the festival's official page.

Following the screening, writer/director Kerem Sanga was joined by close to two dozen members of the cast and crew for an informative and entertaining Q&A session. Among them were stars Haley Lu Richardson, Ryan Malgarini, Osric Chau, Sam Aotaki, Jessica Lu, and Melora Walters, along with editor Ryan Brown, composer John Swihart, music supervisor Jay MacLeay, cinematographer Ricardo Diaz, First Assistant Director Michael Greene, Line Producer Sage Scroope, Co-Executive Producer Ross Christiansen, Executive Producers Ben Ross and Chris Colbert, and producers Seth Caplan, Danny Leiner, David Hunter, and Ross Putman.

Here are some pictures I shot during the Q&A:
