Video of Michael Sheen, Maria Bello Q&A at “Beautiful Boy” World Premiere
On Sunday, September 12, 2010 I attended the gala World Premiere of Beautiful Boy at the Toronto International Film Festival. The sold-out screening was held in the elegant 500-seat Elizabeth Bader Theatre. The film was featured in the Discovery section.
Beautiful Boy is the feature film debut for director Shawn Ku from a script he co-wrote with Michael Armbruster. Maria Bello (Kate Carroll) and Michael Sheen (Bill Carroll) star as the parents of an 18 year-old freshman college student whose actions force the couple to confront their worst nightmare. Indie favorite Kyle Gallner plays their son, seen rarely throughout the film but with scenes pivotal to the impact of the story. Moon Bloodgood, Alan Tudyk, David Lipper, and Meat Loaf Aday are excellent in support.
It is impossible to discuss the story without spoilers, so I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to know more. I do have to say, though, that the film can be very hard to watch at times and I strongly urge viewers to read a basic synopsis to be aware of the subject matter.
It was difficult for me to hold back tears during the film. I broke down several times. Many will be touched by certain scenes more than others, but Beautiful Boy is one of the most affecting and emotional films I've ever seen and one of the best of 2010.
Director Shawn Ku was joined onstage by stars Maria Bello and Michael Sheen along with actor David Lipper and producer Eric Gozlan for a Q&A following the screening.
Here is the first portion of the Q&A. It necessarily has spoilers given the subject matter.
NOTE: Beautiful Boy went on to win the International Federation of Film Critics Awards (FIPRESCI) prize for Discovery Programme. It has been picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay.
For 20 years I was a professional in the entertainment industry, from commercial broadcast radio in America's fourth largest market to band management to record production. But my passion is independent film, and I spend much of the year traveling to film festivals to see indies and meet the actors, directors, and others responsible for creating them.
