bit early for a DVD +Blu-Ray release but fans should be looking forward to the extras. Not a harry potter but solid numbers now at $ 219 + Million worldwide should reach $ 221-222 M at end of run slightly higher than the projected $200-202 M and highest earner among the other films which opened on President's Day which is not exactly a main film-opening weekend as it's in the dead of winter.

Sad that Fox hasn't greenlit the sequel as there has been more interest in the book series and the lead star, Lerman. It is a "putnonner" for the young actor despite the film's mixed reviews. if there is a sequel though, they should come up with a better script and directing.

@randall - agree. the film could've been better and i think if they do make a sequel, the production will make it truer to the spirit of the book series so you don't alienate fans. Heard that Fox doesn't have the rights to film the 2nd book so maybe they need to get that sorted out first. But could they conceivably do a sequel which is not based on the 2nd book but with a similar storyline?

That's a great question. I would imagine any use of the Percy name and characters must get Riordan's approval even if they come up with a new story not based on his books. So while you're correct that they didn't buy Sea of Monsters, I don't think that would be an issue. The only thing I can come up with is that the inside story about them needing $100M to greenlight #2 referred to domestic only and not worldwide. Your numbers are spot on, though.

To comment on the other points you made --

The first in a potential franchise based on a book series almost has to be a bit different from the first book because there can be no assumption there will even be a #2, unless the plan is to do more than one right off the bat (LOTR). So the first one has to be broad enough to bring in people who didn't/wouldn't read the series. That will almost always alienate purists, but they need to understand that without widening the appeal by changing the story you could be killing the franchise from day one. The fans must realize that they may be upset in the short term but in the long term it may be the difference between the film becoming a franchise or a one-off.

They could, of course, do what Summit did with Twilight (and has been done with many franchises) and hire a different director (and/or screenwriter).

As far as DVD release is concerned, it's actually a bit late compared to recent trends, which have been closer to 3 months after peak domestic box office. Avatar is already out and it's still in 421 theaters.

@larry - june release is probably to catch the end of the school year when younger audiences will be in malls, have more time on their hands and will be more attentive to pre DVD/bluray release buzz.

there is potential in the series and hope dvd sales will help fox decide to greenlight a #2. shame to also waste lerman's new popularity with audiences. got ur point re diff between story and film

That makes sense about the timing. I don't know about DVD sales affecting the decision to greenlight #2 -- never really heard of that happening before since box office and home entertainment are so separate, in terms of how the industry works. But anything is possible.

Either way, I think Lerman's newfound popularity is helping him, although people don't see it yet. Tons of scripts are heading his way which wouldn't otherwise, and what he does end up doing is likely to have been offered to him because of Percy. Not to mention how much it will increase his salary.

I loved the Percy Jackson book series, and although the movie had multiple changes in it that annoyed some people, including me, I think and strongly hope that there will be a second movie. I think that Ares, and Clarisse should be introduced, i'm curious as to what the god of war looks, and acts like compared to the description in the series! LONG LIVE PERCY!
