In my travels to the best film festivals in…
The prestigious Golden Globe Awards were handed out tonight by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The trophies are still widely considered to be a good indicator of Oscar potential, even though experience has often proved otherwise --- only about one third of Globes winners actually go on to win Academy Awards. While the numerous critics’ nominations and awards revealed over the past couple of weeks can be even more reliable in predicting who will win Oscars, the Golden Globes have the highest public visibility and are said to signal the traditional “start of Oscar season.”
Boyhood was the night's big winner, taking three top awards. Richard Linklater's shot-over-12-years masterpiece won Best Picture (Drama), Director, and Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). Best Picture in the Comedy or Musical category went to Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. Although Birdman had topped the nominations tally with seven, it only took home two awards: Best Actor - Comedy or Musical to Michael Keaton and Best Screenplay. Julianne Moore was awarded Best Actress in a Drama for Still Alice. In the Comedy or Musical category, Best Actress honors went to Amy Adams for Big Eyes. Best Actor in a Drama was Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything. J.K. Simmons picked up Best Supporting Actor honors for Whiplash.
Jóhann Jóhannsson won Best Original Score for The Theory of Everything while John Legend and Common's "Glory" was the Best Original Song from Selma. Other top movie winners included Russia's Leviathan for Foreign Language Film and How to Train Your Dragon 2 for Best Animated Feature.
Currently celebrating its 72nd year in Hollywood, the enigmatic Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a distinguished group of critics and reporters for overseas outlets representing 55 countries with a combined readership of more than 250 million. Their publications include leading newspapers and magazines in Europe, Asia, Australasia, and Latin America. Founded in the 1940s during World War II, the HFPA was originally comprised of a handful of LA-based overseas journalists who sought to bridge the international community with Hollywood, and to provide distraction from the hardships of war through film. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual Golden Globe Awards, the third most watched awards show on television, have enabled the non-profit organization to donate more than $15 million in the past 19 years to entertainment-related charities, as well as funding scholarships and other programs for future film and television professionals.
The 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards were telecast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Parks and Recreation’s Amy Poehler and former 30 Rock star Tina Fey hosted the ceremonies for the third time.
