2012 Cannes Film Festival Complete Schedule, includes buzz films Cosmopolis, On The Road The 65th Festival de Cannes, as it's officially known, kicks off May 16 and runs through May 27 on the French Mediterranean. Nobody needs to be told (at least those who read this blog) that Cannes is still the premiere international cinema celebration. While it may not focus on indies as much as others (Berlin, Toronto) it is certainly the most high profile movie event in the world.

As with all film festivals, there are separate sections. The more highly-anticipated titles are those in competition. There are also Out of Competition films, Special Screenings, Midnight Screenings, and Un Certain Regard, a program of more "offbeat" films worth "a certain glance." In addition, Cannes has "sidebars" which include the Directors' Fortnight and International Critics Week. Any and all selected films can claim that they "are going to be at Cannes" and be equally valid, and deserving of praise and attention.
The official Opening Night Film is Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom. It will kick off the fortnight of features at the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals on May 16. Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman star along with Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman as the lead children in this New England-shot tale of the summer of 1965. The World Premiere of David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis will also be a festival highlight. The film's all-star cast includes Robert Pattinson, Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel, Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, and Kevin Durand. Shooting took place last summer in New York and Toronto. Walter Salles' On The Road is another big buzz movie which will draw a lot of attention, at least partly due to Kristen Stewart's presence. Thérèse Desqueyroux by Claude Miller, with Audrey Tautou in the title role, Gilles Lellouche, and Anaïs Demoustier, will be screened at the closing ceremony on May 27. Based on the François Mauriac novel, this is Miller's last film. The director passed away on April 4.

No doubt there will be the requisite naysayers among film bloggers who will decry the paucity of innovation among the titles selected. Others will rejoice at seeing the likes of Wes Anderson and David Cronenberg on the list. Personally, as mentioned above, I consider Berlin to be the world's best festival for indies. That will be my overseas destination when the bank account allows. Venice also comes to mind. But nothing beats Cannes for the sheer magnitude of its ability to attract the world's media and, in so doing, public attention.

But there will be plenty of top notch independent filmmakers featured this year and a great deal of talent showcased in their movies, including many directors and actors featured in some of my previously recognized Top Picks from festivals I've attended. Besides the aforementioned Cosmopolis and On the Road, I'm particularly excited to see Jeff Nichols' Mud appearing In Competition this year. His Take Shelter debuted at Sundance last year. I saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival and it made my Top 10 of 2011. Xavier Dolan's first feature, I Killed My Mother, was one of my Top Picks from Toronto 2009. It arrived in Canada after having won the C.I.C.A.E. Award, Prix Regards Jeune, and SACD Prize (Directors' Fortnight) at Cannes. The 23 year-old is back this year in Un Certain Regard with Laurence Anyways. Director John Hillcoat is In Competition with Lawless. His adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road played Venice and Toronto in 2009 and is one of my favorite films of the past 10 years.

Congratulations to one and all. As always, additional titles may be added as Opening Night approaches.

Larry Richman

For 20 years I was a professional in the entertainment industry, from commercial broadcast radio in America's fourth largest market to band management to record production. But my passion is independent film, and I spend much of the year traveling to film festivals to see indies and meet the actors, directors, and others responsible for creating them. I'm a writer, photographer, and videographer, currently serving as Senior Vice President for Media & Technology and Public Relations at PROnetworks as well as Editor at Larry411.com
