2012 Academy Awards Winners The 84th Academy Awards have now taken their place their place in cinematic history. Once again, independent films dominated the list, including Best Picture winner The Artist. This was the 20th time in the past 31 years that the top prize went to an indie. The Weinstein Company's black & white silent film took home five awards, including Best Picture, Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin), Original Score (Ludovic Bource), and Costume Design.

Tying with five trophies, representing the Hollywood Studios, was Paramount's Hugo. It dominated the technical categories, taking home Oscars for Best Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. The hotly contested award for Best Actress went to the indomitable Meryl Streep for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. That film also won Best Makeup, making it the only other multiple award winner. At age 82, Christopher Plummer is the oldest Academy Award winner of all time, taking home the Best Supporting Actor statuette for Beginners. The Best Supporting Actress honors went to Octavia Spencer for The Help.
Writing awards helped widen the winners' field as Best Original Screenplay went to Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris while the team of Alexander Payne, Nat Faxton, and Jim Rash won Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants. The award for Best Animated Feature went to Rango, while A Separation won Best Foreign Language Film and Undefeated took home the award for Best Documentary Feature. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was honored for Best Editing.

The clear winner by studio was The Weinstein Co. with eight. Paramount won six awards and Sony Pictures Classics took home two. With one award each were DreamWorks, Fox Searchlight, Focus Features, Sony, and Disney. Tonight's Oscars matched the winners of yesterday's Film Independent Spirit Awards in six categories, including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, and Foreign Film.
