The nominees for The 29th Annual Genie Awards have been announced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT). Although overshadowed by the Academy Awards in the U.S., these kudos handed out by our friends north of the border are just as significant nonetheless.

Leading the nominations are Ce qu'il faut pour vivre (The Necessities of Life) with eight nominations and Tout est Parfait (Everything is Fine) with seven nominations. Those nominees are followed closely by Passchendaele, Fugitive Pieces, Amal and Maman est chez le coiffeur (Mommy is at the Hairdresser's), each with six nominations. The 2009 Genie Awards will take place Saturday, April 4th at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa, Ontario and will be broadcast on Global Television. Among the nominees are several favorites from film festivals I attended in 2007-2008. Normal was one of my Top Picks from the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival and one of my 25 Top Picks of 2007. Carl Bessai's film picked up four nominations. Amal was one of my Top Picks from the 2008 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
