My pictures of Elijah Wood, Don McManus Q&A for “Grand Piano” World Premiere at Fantastic Fest 2013

On Tuesday, September 24, 2013 I attended the gala World Premiere of Grand Piano at Fantastic Fest 2013 in Austin, Texas. The sold-out screening was held at the brand new Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline.

Grand Piano marks the second directorial effort for Eugenio Mira. Prior to this production, he worked in Spanish cinema as a writer, producer, composer, camera operator, second unit director, and actor. While he's directed a number of shorts, his only feature to date was 2010's Agnosia. This film is his first foray into the world of mainstream commercial appeal.

To do so, he enlisted an impressive lineup of actors, starting with Elijah Wood, Don McManus, John Cusack, Tamsin Egerton, and Alex Winter.

Grand Piano was shot mostly in real time, during the course of an orchestra concert in which Wood plays a young piano prodigy. The music played in the hall provides the score for the film itself. Dramatic, sweeping crane shots and long takes help define the magnificent cinematography that defines the look of this epic. Its premiere at this genre festival was based partly on its themes, reminiscent of Hitchcock and De Palma. The Black Swan crowd, in particular, should delight at the blend of original classical music and tragedy played out in front of a live audience. But this magnificent motion picture should appeal to a variety of viewers worldwide.

Director Eugenio Mira introduced the film along with stars Elijah Wood and Don McManus. They returned for an informative and hilarious Q&A after the screening along with Elijah's piano teacher Miriam.

Here are some pictures I shot during the intro, Q&A, and afterward:
