In my travels to the best film festivals in…
This is my weekly "Here's what I saw at this year's Toronto International Film Festival That's Opening This Weekend That I Recommend" post.
The only film hitting screens this weekend from my TIFF lineup is Breathe, which Bleecker Street Media is rolling out at just four theaters. I attended the World Premiere on September 12. It did make my TIFF Top 10 (out of 50 films). Based on a true story, this lush UK period piece stars Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield as real life couple Robin and Diana Cavendish who, as the official description says, "refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease." I shall say no more. The picture was directed by actor Andy Serkis, known best as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes movies and as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings series.
The film features the amazing cinematography of Robert Richardson, one of the best and most honored DPs in the world with nine Academy Award nominations and wins. He is a favorite of Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone. Richardson won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for JFK (1992), The Aviator (2005), Hugo (2012), and Hateful Eight (2016). He was nominated for Platoon (1987), Born on the 4th of July (1990), Snow Falling on Cedars (2000), Inglorious Basterds (2010), and Django Unchained (2013).
Here's a SPOILERY trailer if so inclined.
And another.
